Care of varnished furniture

Varnishing countertops is an excellent protection for wood. Keeping varnished surfaces clean is not a difficult task. Remove dust, dirt and other impurities with a soft, dry cloth, e.g. microfiber. Using any cleaning agent, apply it first to a cloth and only then to the wood. Do not apply products directly to the wood. Remove dissolved dirt with a clean cloth. Remember that unsuitable means can discolor the wood. Therefore, always check on the label whether the product is intended for varnished wooden furniture and apply it in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Wooden furniture does not like water, so you should not wash it with water and liquid. Proceed very carefully if you want to use homemade ways to clean wood. Unsuitable methods can permanently damage the painted surface. Always check whether the product is intended for varnished wooden surfaces.

Remember that there are different wood finishes (e.g. gloss, matt) and there is a different care product for each. One product cannot simultaneously give shine and matt the wood. Glossy furniture is often tarnished over the years. For preservation, use a suitable and intended for this product, which will give a beautiful shine. If you have furniture with a matte finish, use a suitable and designed matte finish so that the matte surface stops shining. Do not buy two-in-one universal products. The agent can either clean or protect the wood.

Properly used and maintained varnished top made of solid wood, does not require replacement of the varnish coating, thanks to which varnished countertops retain their beautiful appearance for a long time.

Care of oiled furniture

Care of oiled furniture will allow us to enjoy their natural appearance for many years. It is not particularly difficult, but it requires the application of several rules and, above all, regularity. Oiled tops are cleaned with a dry or slightly moistened, soft cloth to avoid minor scratches on the surface. Make sure that it is damp, but not wet. It is also worth remembering that oiled furniture should be cleaned in accordance with the arrangement of the jars. Solid wood countertops finished with oil must be covered with oil again from time to time. This will make them look like new.

Never wash furniture oiled with detergents! This is a simple way to create a bothersome discolored stain. The same applies to accidental spillage of alcohol, it should be removed quickly to prevent absorption into the structure of the wood, as this can discolor the wood. And hot dishes that will leave a mark on the surface. Oiled wooden furniture is always cleaned only with mild agents designed specifically for them. Always check the cleaner before using it in an invisible place. Apply to a cloth and clean the wood. Remove the dirt with a clean cloth.

Wood absorbs oil gradually, which is why oiling should be done systematically. The frequency of oiling depends on the type of surface, usually 2-3 times a year (on both sides). Always check the oil before use in an invisible place. Do not use it on a wet surface. Before oiling, remove dirt, dust and grease from the wood with a suitable cleaner for oiled furniture.

Oiling in a few steps:

  • surface grinding: clean the top with low-gradation sandpaper P180-220, it can be paper in cubes or with a grinder (always along the wood grain!),
  • thoroughly clean the resulting dust with a vacuum cleaner or cloth (remember not to soak the sanded countertop, because the wood fibers may rise and the top will become rough,
  • oil-wax application: with a flat brush or a soft cloth (one that will not leave ferns), apply oil-wax, always along the wood grain – apply as many layers asrecommended by the manufacturer on the packaging,
  • after 30 minutes, gently collect excess oil with a cloth,
    leave to dry, preferably overnight,
  • polish with a soft dry cloth.

Oiled wood care should be carried out several times a year. We use such products on home furniture. The right product for oiled wood will remove shine and glowing stains. Before using the care product, clean the wood with a wood cleaner. The care product, such as cleaning and oiling products, check before use in an invisible place. Apply with a soft cloth and let dry. The oiled wood care product will leave a matte finish on the wood and remove glowing stains.

Cleaning and care of varnished and oiled furniture allows you to preserve their beauty for a long time. The way wooden furniture is finished is of great importance for their appearance, but also for durability, care methods or renovation possibilities. The choice of the right way of finishing furniture should be dictated, m.in, by such issues as the assumed intensity of furniture exploitation and its location. The decision should therefore be made based on a thorough analysis of all these factors, adjusting the way the furniture is finished to the individual needs and conditions of each customer.
